Assessment

Every child’s journey at Beyond Speech begins with a 1-hour assessment session. This first session allows us to understand your child as a whole — not just their skills, but their personality, learning style, and your family’s concerns. We start with a parent interview and case history, followed by a combination of formal and informal assessment tools. A short “trial” therapy activity is also included to observe how your child learns, responds to support, and engages with tasks. At the end of the session, we share our clinical impressions and discuss personalised recommendations.

What happens during an assessment

1. Parent interview

We begin by listening to your concerns and goals, and gathering information about your child’s development, learning history, and everyday communication.

2. Case history review

This helps us understand your child’s background, strengths, and any previous support they may have received.

3. Formal and informal assessments

We use a mix of standardised tools, observations, and play- or task-based activities to evaluate your child’s communication or learning skills in a natural and engaging way.

4. Trial therapy activity

Your child participates in a short therapy-style activity so we can assess how they respond to support, learn new skills, and engage during sessions.

5. Child-friendly approach

• For younger children: sessions are play-based to support comfort and authentic interaction.

• For older children: games and breaks are included to reduce anxiety and ensure accurate performance.

6. Feedback and recommendations

At the end of the session, we share our clinical impressions and discuss next steps, including:

•Whether therapy is recommended
•Suggested therapy frequency
•What therapy may involve
•How we can support your child moving forward

Parents are involved throughout the process, and all recommendations are tailored to your child’s individual needs.
