Speech Therapy for Autism

Therapy for Autistic Children in Singapore

Every autistic child communicates. Some speak in sentences, some in single words, and some through gestures, sounds, or a favourite song. Therapy for autism at Beyond Speech starts from that belief: we meet your child where they are, then grow their communication through the things they already love, whether that is play, music, movement, or even water play.

Therapy for Autistic Children Delivered by Speech Therapists

Communication differences sit at the heart of autism. That is why therapy for autism at Beyond Speech is led by qualified speech therapists, trained in how children develop language, play, and social connection.

As a team providing speech therapy in Singapore for children from infancy through the teenage years, we work on the whole picture: helping your child understand others, express themselves, and enjoy connecting with the people they care about. Sessions run at our clinic in Funan Mall, and at your home or your child’s school where suitable.

Understanding autism

What Is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong difference in how a person communicates, relates to others, and experiences the world. It is called a spectrum because no two autistic children are alike: one may speak fluently but find friendships confusing, another may not use words yet, and both are autistic.

Autism is not an illness, and it is not caused by parenting. Autistic children often carry real strengths: deep focus on what they love, strong memories, honesty, and their own way of seeing the world. Therapy does not aim to make your child less autistic. It aims to give them communication tools to be understood, so frustration shrinks and connection grows.

What to look out for

Early Signs of Autism

Signs of autism often appear in the first two years, and parents are usually the first to notice. Common early signs include:

  • ·Few or no words by 18 months, or words that appeared and then faded
  • ·Limited eye contact and few shared smiles
  • ·Repeating phrases from shows or conversations more than creating their own
  • ·Lining up toys, repeating the same play, or distress over small changes in routine
  • ·Big reactions to sounds, textures, or certain foods
  • ·Pulling adults’ hands to objects to get what they want
  • ·Repetitive movements when your child is excited, overwhelmed (e.g. flapping their hands, rocking their bodies, repeating words/ sounds)

A checklist is never a diagnosis. Some of these show up in children who are not autistic, and some autistic children show few of them. If several feel familiar, do not wait and see. Book an assessment and talk it through with a therapist.

The journey

What Our Therapy for Autism Comprises

Therapy for autistic children at Beyond Speech follows the same honest structure for every family:

1

A conversation first

A free initial consult, where you share what you have noticed and we advise whether a full assessment makes sense.

2

A full assessment

A 1-hour session combining a parent interview with formal and informal assessment, done through play so your child stays comfortable. You are welcome in the room throughout.

3

A plan built around your child

Goals are set together with you, shaped by your child’s profile and what matters most at home and in school.

4

Therapy that looks like play

Weekly 1-hour sessions built on your child’s interests, because children learn communication fastest inside moments they enjoy. Part of each session coaches you on strategies to use at home.

5

Progress you can see

The therapist documents every session and shares regular updates with you. A progress memo will be shared with you every 10 sessions or three months.

Evidence-based tools

Therapy Techniques We Use at Beyond Speech

No single method fits every autistic child, so effective therapy for autistic children cannot be one-size-fits-all. Our therapists are trained across several evidence-based approaches and choose what fits yours:

Hanen More Than Words®

A structured parent coaching programme designed specifically for parents of autistic children, led by our certified Program Leaders.

Play-based, child-led therapy

Sessions follow your child’s interests, so communication grows from genuine motivation rather than drills.

Gestalt language support

For children who pick up language in whole phrases and scripts rather than single words, we build from those scripts toward flexible, original speech.

Social communication approaches

Including Social Thinking, which helps school-aged children and teens make sense of conversations, friendships, and group settings.

Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)

Tools such as Proloquo2Go, TouchChat, PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), communication boards, sign language and speech-generating devices help children with few or no spoken words express their needs, choices and ideas in a way that works for them.

Sensory-informed sessions

Our therapists are trained in sensory integration techniques, so sessions respect your child’s sensory profile instead of fighting it.

Testimonials

What Parents Say

Families often arrive at our door soon after a diagnosis, unsure what comes next. Here is what they tell us later:

★★★★★
Working with Xian Hui since the end of 2023 upon my son’s ASD diagnosis… his transformation has been remarkable, he now consciously spells words using correct sounds, and his social communication has improved. Most importantly he looks forward to attending the weekly session.
Mother of a 7-year-old boy, E
★★★★★
Teacher Tammy took the time to understand my child’s unique needs and worked diligently on the specific sounds he struggled with. The progress has been tremendous — and the invaluable tips she shares mean we can keep building his speech at home.
Mother of a 7-year-old boy, R
★★★★★
I could see the significant changes in her speech — clarity, confidence and articulation. Sounds she couldn’t pronounce at first, she now says out loud, and she even corrects herself. It improves her self-esteem every time she expresses her thoughts.

Questions parents ask

Therapy for Autism FAQs

Can therapy help a child with autism?

+

Yes. Autism is lifelong, but the challenges that come with it respond well to support. Speech therapy for autism is one of the most established interventions because communication sits at the centre of so much else: learning, friendships, confidence, and family life. Therapy also equips you as a parent, because a parent who knows how to respond turns everyday moments into practice.

What is the best treatment for autism?

+

There is no single best treatment for autism, and it is wise to be careful with anyone who claims otherwise. The evidence consistently supports individualised therapy focused on communication and daily life, delivered by qualified professionals, started early, with parents deeply involved. That is exactly how we build every treatment plan at Beyond Speech.

When is the best age to start therapy for autism?

+

As early as possible, because young brains adapt fastest, but it is never too late. Our therapists support children right through the teenage years. The best time to start is when you first feel concerned.

What happens if a child with autism does not get support?

+

Autism itself does not turn into something worse, but the gap between what a child wants to say and what they can say tends to grow, and with it frustration, meltdowns, withdrawal, or struggles at school. With early support, children build communication tools before that frustration turns into anxiety or lost confidence.

Can a child with autism lead a full and independent life?

+

Many autistic people study in mainstream schools, build careers, form deep friendships, and live independently. Every child’s path is their own, and no honest therapist promises a specific outcome. What we can say is that communication support removes the biggest barrier between your child and the life they want, and the earlier that work starts, the more doors stay open.

What should I look for when choosing autism treatment for my child?

+

Look for registered professionals (in Singapore, speech therapists register with the AHPC), methods they can explain in plain language, sessions built around your child rather than a fixed curriculum, genuine parent involvement, and honest advice. Be wary of anyone promising a cure or a fixed timeline. We recommend therapy only when it is truly needed, and we tell you when it is not.

How long will my child need therapy for autism?

+

There is no standard number of sessions. Goals are set with you, progress is documented every session. When goals are met, we say so. We work towards the day your child no longer needs us.

How much does therapy for autism cost in Singapore?

+

Therapy for autistic children at Beyond Speech runs through our speech therapy sessions: $230 per hour on weekdays and $250 on weekends, with 10-session packages at $2,185 and $2,375. Home-based sessions are $280 per hour. Every journey starts with a free initial consultation, followed by a 1-hour assessment at $230 on weekdays or $250 on weekends. See all rates on our fees page, or message us on WhatsApp about our ongoing promotions.
