School-Based Speech Therapy in Singapore

School-based speech therapy is one-to-one support delivered within a child’s preschool. Sessions can happen inside the classroom or in a quieter pull-out space, depending on the child’s needs and the school’s arrangements. The therapist works on specific communication goals and shares practical guidance with the adults who support the child every day.

This is different from a screening. A screening gives a brief, non-diagnostic overview. Therapy is ongoing intervention built around a child’s individual needs and goals.

School-Based Therapy Delivered by Speech Therapists

What makes our approach different is that school-based support at Beyond Speech is delivered by qualified paediatric speech therapists, working with each child inside their own preschool.

Because our therapists observe and support children in the setting where they learn, play and talk all day, they can build goals around real school routines and hand teachers and parents strategies they can use straight away. This is the same team that leads our clinic work, brought into the preschool so support fits the way a child actually communicates.

When to ask for guidance

A Child May Benefit From Guidance or Screening If They…

Speak unclearly
Are not talking yet by 18 months
Struggle to find the right words
Find it hard to follow instructions
Have difficulty making friends
Have difficulty understanding stories
Have difficulty answering questions
Easily forget what they hear or learn

These signs can have different causes. They are a reason to ask for guidance.

Free Speech and Language Screening for Preschools

Our team offers free screening for selected preschool students, with each screening taking approximately 30 minutes. The screening looks at speech, language and social communication, then gives the school guidance on possible next steps.

A screening is not a diagnosis or a full assessment. It provides a brief overview of a child’s speech, language and social communication skills. A full assessment may be recommended when further investigation is needed.

Beyond the classroom

Support Beyond the School Day

Some children need support beyond the school day. Families can meet our speech therapists in Singapore at the clinic or at home. If reading, spelling or writing is the bigger challenge, our educational therapy programme builds literacy skills. For autism-specific communication support, our therapy for autism uses play and each child’s interests to build connection.

We attended a Speech in Play session and enjoyed it so much! Not only was it a really relaxed environment for my 14 month old to engage in sensory play with thoughtfully curated toys, but it was extremely educational and we got the chance to use the skills we were taught as parents immediately. Although it was in a group setting, Xian Hui and Tammy really took the time to engage with each family to understand more about each child and offer specific guidance on how to encourage their language development. They even generously shared reading resources for me to explore after. Highly recommend!

Working with Xian Hui since the end of 2023 upon my son’s ASD diagnosis. At the age of 5, he was unable to recognise all 26 alphabets, spoke unclearly with a lot of babble and subconsciously replaced all “f” sounds with “p” sounds. Upon starting the journey with Xian Hui, his transformation has been remarkable — he now consciously spells words using the correct sounds, and his social communication has also improved. Most importantly, he is looking forward to attending the weekly session. I highly recommend Xian Hui to parents who are looking for speech or education therapy.

I am happy to share the experience of my child’s speech therapist, Teacher Tammy. Through the speech therapy sessions, she has built a strong rapport with my child. She took the time to understand my child’s unique needs and worked diligently to address the specific sounds that my child struggled with. The progress my child has made under Teacher Tammy’s guidance has been tremendous — I am amazed at the progress he has made to pronounce sounds that were previously challenging for him. She also tries innovative ways to engage my child, which made the therapy sessions enjoyable and effective. My child has grown to love attending therapy, and looks forward to each session with excitement. One aspect that impressed me was the invaluable tips she provided for us to work on at home — creative and effective techniques we could incorporate into our daily routine to further enhance my child’s speech development.

L has been with Ms. Tammy for almost a year. When L just started speech therapy with Ms. Tammy, she was excited to go to Ms. Tammy’s class. I could see the significant changes of speech within her — clarity, confidence to speak, and articulation. The sounds she couldn’t pronounce at first, e.g. “sh,” “ch,” “t,” “d,” “l,” “cl,” and more — now she’s able to say them out loud. When L pronounces words wrongly, she will correct it herself. This has clearly helped her with socialising with adults and her friends around her. We don’t have to guess what she is trying to say, and it improves her self-esteem every time she wants to express her thoughts to us. Ms. Tammy also extended her help by helping L with her Chinese too. Thank you, Ms. Tammy, for helping L grow, and she will continue to be better under your help.
